The Blind Flyers (German)
Tuesday 10 November 2009, 10 AM

Marie and Inga are not too different from other girls their age – they just can’t see. For them this is perfectly normal, but the “gawpers” see things differently. The girls gain further evidence of this when they audition for a schoolboy band which needs new members. The musicians gape as Marie unpacks her guitar and Inga gets out her saxophone and they are wowed by the girls’ talent. But two blind girls wouldn’t give the band the glamorous image it is aiming for. Marie and Inga already know this and don’t let the experience dampen their spirits. An unexpected meeting with a boy from Kazakhstan changes their lives. The youngsters must overcome many difficulties but eventually success is theirs: Marie and Inga’s band “Blindflyers” is a resounding hit and the boy can return to his homeland.

Teaching in a decrepit Los Angeles neighborhood, Esquith took it upon himself to impart the works of Shakespeare to the kids who patrol the streets by night and reluctantly turn up to school by day. As this film shows, the results were remarkable, with the majority of the kids taking to the Bard like a duck to water, largely thanks to Esquith's innovative teaching methods.
